Applying to UK universities — UCAS & the personal statement

Putting together a very strong UCAS application is a vital part of any UK university application. From choosing the right course and university to writing a convincing personal statement that stands out from the crowd is something with which Minerva Tuition can help. As an Admissions Tutor at a top Russell Group university said at a presentation recently: “Don’t apply to our university.” By that, he meant: “Don’t apply to us because of our name; apply to us because we offer the course that you want to read for three or four years.” This is such an obvious idea, but many students and their parents can become fixated on an institution rather than on what is actually the most important reason to go to university: to read a course that you are genuinely deeply interested in and want to enjoy. Minerva Tuition helps students through the options available by getting to know them individually through one-to-one tuition and guidance. We have many years’ experience in this area. The UCAS personal statement is probably the most daunting part of a UK university application for most students and yet there is no need for this to be the case - it should be very enjoyable. Helping students to write a very strong statement is something we at Minerva Tuition have much experience in. By getting to know an individual through one-to-one meetings, we can really help with the do’s and don’ts of this (unnecessarily unsettling) process. The UCAS personal statement is a maximum of 4000 characters including spaces; some very able and keen students have so much they want to write, and need guidance in what is the most important and relevant. Other candidates simply do not know where to start and some do not think they have enough material that they can use. Whatever the reason for a student’s trepidation, Minerva can provide all the support required in this vital part of the application.
