𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: 𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐔.𝐊. 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏? Science is frequently divided into its constituent components in Years 7 and 8 in the UK’s leading preparatory schools as pupils prepare for the transition to senior school. Pupils may receive discrete lessons in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
𝐄𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 The teaching of science in the UK is designed to encourage students to develop their investigative scientific skills. Year 7 and 8 students enjoy participating in frequent class experiments and quickly develop their ability to follow instructions carefully, use a wide range of apparatus, measure variables and record tables of results.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬 Topics taught in Year 7 and 8 vary slightly from school to school. Most British pupils will arrive in the biology laboratories of their senior school familiar with cells, microscopes, cell division, biological molecules and enzymes in biology.
𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 Pupils learn to apply their knowledge and understanding to new situations. As students enter Year 9 they will design scientific investigations, control variables, collect and process valid data and write hypotheses with the application of knowledge. The drawing and interpretation of graphs, calculations of mean and range are practised to enable meaningful analysis of experimental data.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 The aim is to develop thinking scientists who are curious and keen to investigate scientific processes.
