𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐊 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 Moving from one school to another is daunting at the best of times but the prospect of starting as a boarder in a school in a different country thousands of miles away can be challenging. Helping to overcome these challenges and to make a smooth transition to boarding school is where the experience of Minerva Tuition comes into play. Ensuring that pupils are well placed to settle socially in their new school is important. Key concerns are typically about making new friends, adapting to boarding, dealing with possible homesickness and coping with unfamiliar surroundings. And of course, the British winter climate can be testing! A key factor in the transition process is appointing a guardian who can support your child. Indeed, it is a requirement with nearly all UK boarding schools that a UK-based guardian is appointed. Guardians are there to oversee academic progress, including attending parents evenings and participating generally in school life, in loco parentis. Guardians are also responsible for organising appropriate home-stay families for exeats and holidays, should travel home not be possible. Minerva always advises parents to appoint a professional guardian and to ensure any guardian is a member of AEGIS. AEGIS ensures that all guardianship providers meet the highest standard of care and professionalism. Professional guardians will have had appropriate DBS checks conducted; in addition, any home-stay families will have been subject to regular checks to ensure the quality of accommodation and services provided is in line with UK guidelines. Having a guardian whom parents can trust and rely on is crucial both to a smooth transition and the continued well-being of pupils in a UK boarding school.
