Have you got the right tutor for your child?

𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝? Here Minerva Tuition offers advice on how to choose the right tutor for your child.

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐫 The digital revolution enables tutors to teach pupils at their homes, through the power of the internet. Inevitably, the provision of online tuition has encouraged many tutors to advertise their services. However, not all tutors are equal.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 Parents should focus on identifying tutors who have experience in the appropriate educational system. At Minerva, our tutors have experience of the U.K. educational system, often having taught GCSE, A Level, and International Baccalaureate for two decades or more.

𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Before choosing a tutor parents should investigate the qualifications and experience of the potential tutor. Asking to see a teacher’s curriculum vitae will show whether they have the relevant experience to meet your requirements for your child. Asking for a trial lesson may help parents assess whether the tutor matches the needs of the pupil.

𝐀𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 In an unregulated industry, there are many unqualified teachers who are advertising their services. Undergraduates, sometimes yet to complete the first year of their degree, offer their services as a teacher. Although the student may be highly academic and successful in their own field, that student will not have acquired the range of teaching strategies required to help a child struggling to grasp a concept. Nor, at the examination level, will they have experience of matching teaching to the requirements of a particular syllabus. Some online tuition agencies compete on price offering the services of young graduates, who have completed their degrees but have yet to gain either a teaching qualification or teaching experience.

𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 Providing a tutor to support your child overcome areas of weakness or to stretch them in their best subjects is often a very successful addition to their education. However, parents should take time and care over the process of selecting a tutor.
