๐ ๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ก ๐๐ฌ ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐. French is widely considered the worldโs most romantic language and its popularity has seen many people learning the odd phrase. You will likely know the words oui and non and bonjour and au revoir โ not to mention the expression merci beaucoup. Sadly these words on their own will not really suffice if you really want to get by in France! The French are (rightly) very proud of their language and an ability to speak it by non-natives brings great warmth from the French and a wealth of benefits to those who can manage more than a few rote expressions.
๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐: ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฑ Whilst a very romantic language, French is also a Romance language, full of irregularities and exceptions to rules. Even the Acadรฉmie Franรงaise (ombudsman of the French language) accepted this and 2016 saw the removal of the circumflex (the ^ above certain vowels) from hundreds of words. Of course, there are words where the circumflex indicates meaning, and here the circumflex was kept โ for example โduโ means โsomeโ and โdรปโ is the past participle of devoir, โto have toโ. Learners have to remember, though, which one is which! For English speakers the scrapping of the circumflex was a shame. For most words, the ^ represented the โsโ that had dropped from the old French word - โhรดpitalโin French becomes โhospitalโ and โmaรฎtresseโ becomes โmistressโ. Similarly โavec hรขteโ would become โwith hasteโ and โfรชteโ would become โfeast/festival/partyโ.

At Minerva we have a vast amount of experience in tutoring French language (and its intricacies) and literature. One-to-one bespoke lessons are a sure way to make great progress.
